Get Free Heat From a Black Box & Some Beer Cans Or a Black Sewer Pipe and a Recycled Storm Window

Getting Free Heat does not have to be a big deal or an expensive process. When using items from your local home improvement store, the cost of building a basic window air heater can be very reasonable. When you use old materials from your shed or garage it can even be cheaper to construct.

Window air heaters are showing up everywhere on the internet, with designs ranging from aluminum beer cans to my version that used some leftover plastic pipe used for French drains.

Either method you choose, the principle is the same; absorb the sun's light and transfer it into hot air using an enclosed heat chamber. It is fairly simple to build one with basic carpentry skills and some common items left over from other projects.

Beer or soda cans stacked together and painted black is one common design used in many home made versions. Unfortunately, you have to drill holes into the bottom of each and prime the outside for holding the black paint in order for the cans to absorb and transfer the heat upward.

I elected to not use aluminum cans as the mechanism to store and generate heat for my greenhouse solar heater. Instead, I selected a common non perforated sewer pipe for my heat generator.

This design offered two important aspects, reduction in construction time and still be a lightweight. This makes the unit more portable and usable in different situations or locations. Other than that, I was able to duplicate the building process using scrap wood, a window pane from an old storm window, some black paint and tub caulking. It took about an hour to cut the pieces and assemble the window air heater.

In summary, getting free heat from a window air heater is an easy way to save a few bucks and contribute to a carbon free environment. Making it from scrap materials made the experience that much better.

Cyber Monday Black & Decker PD600 Pivot Plus 6-Volt Nicad Cordless Screwdriver with Articulating Head Overview

We can't think of anything we'd want to add to this little hummer. It's incredible what B&D has engineered into this system (we don't think it's fair to call it a "screwdriver"). Dual speed range lets you drill holes at high speed and drive screws at the slower speed. A 23-position clutch, just like what's on the big boys, will keep you from stripping your screws. But get this: Unlike conventional cordless screwdrivers and regular power drills, this tool's handle easily locks in three positions for tight areas and awkward spots. Genius! And just like the "real" drills, this one's got an accessible forward/reverse rocker switch for backing screws out, too. Here's something, though, that the big-boy drill makers should pick up: It's got on integrated light so you can always see your work surface clearly. For the money, we haven't seen anything like it. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste
